History of Sinn Watches

Sinn Watches is a German watch company that has been around for more than 60 years. The company was founded in 1961 by Helmut Sinn, a former pilot.

He had a passion for aviation and a desire to create high-quality, reliable watches. Watches that could withstand the rigours of flying.

Sinn Watches gained a reputation very fast. They were well known for producing timepieces that were innovative, rugged, and functional.

The company’s first watches were designed specifically for pilots. It had features such as chronographs, slide-rule bezels, and anti-magnetic protection.

These watches were popular not only with pilots but also with anyone who needed a reliable and durable timepiece.

Over the years, Sinn Watches continued to innovate and expand its product line. In the 1970s, the company introduced diving watches.

These watches have water resistance up to 2000 meters. In the 1980s, it developed watches with temperature resistance up to 80°C. With anti-fogging technology.

Sinn Watches also became known for its use of high-quality materials. Such as stainless steel, titanium, and sapphire crystal.

The company’s watches were also known for their accuracy. With many models featuring chronometer-certified movements.

Today, Sinn Watches continues to be a leading watch brand. With a wide range of models designed for pilots, divers, and anyone who values quality and durability in a timepiece.

The company’s commitment to innovation and precision is the best. Due to these factors, they have earned a loyal following from customers around the world.

Its watches are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Sinn 104

Sinn 104

The 104 is Sinn’s signature pilot watch. As such, it has a bit more of a traditional look than some of its other offerings. That doesn’t mean you’re stuck with a boring watch, though.

The Sinn 104 is available in five different colour options. Plus with over a dozen different strap options.

All variants are high-visibility, with wide lume hashes at the five-minute mark. Along with that a wide lume stripes down the hour and minute hands.

The dial options are black, white, cobalt blue, and rose gold. With an extra black variant that features Arabic numerals. Besides, the five-minute hashes.

I don’t usually talk much about straps, but in this case, the number of options bears mentioning.

You can choose between leather, steel, and silicone. The silicone strap is plain black, but there are two steel variants as well as 25 different leather types.

Design

Sinn 104

The Sinn 104 has a classic pilot’s watch design with a 41mm stainless steel case. With a black dial with white numerals, and luminous hands and markers.

The case is water-resistant up to 200 meters. It also has a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating.

The watch also comes with a stainless steel bracelet or a leather strap. This depends on your choice.

One of the standout design features of the Sinn 104 is its legibility. The white numerals and hands on the black dial make it easy to read the time, even in low-light conditions.

The date window at the 3 o’clock position is also easy to read and adds a practical touch to the watch.

Movement

The Sinn 104 is powered by the Sellita SW220-1 automatic movement. It is a reliable and accurate movement with a power reserve of 38 hours.

The movement is visible through the exhibition case back. Which adds a nice touch to the watch and allows you to appreciate the inner workings of the movement.

Features

The Sinn 104 has several features that make it a versatile watch for everyday wear. The watch has a bi-directional rotating bezel with a 60-minute scale.

This can be used for timing events or as a countdown timer. The watch also has a screw-down crown and case back. This helps to enhance the watch’s water resistance.

One of the unique features of the Sinn 104 is its anti-magnetic properties. The watch is designed to withstand magnetic fields of up to 80,000 A/m. It is higher than the industry standard of 4,800 A/m.

This feature makes the Sinn 104 a great watch. Especially for those who work in environments with high magnetic fields. Such as pilots, engineers, or medical professionals.

Performance

The Sinn 104 is a reliable and accurate timepiece that performs well in everyday use. The watch’s automatic movement keeps accurate time and has a smooth sweep to the second hand.

The watch is also comfortable to wear. Thanks to its well-crafted stainless steel case and bracelet or leather strap.

On a whole, the Sinn 104 is an excellent pilot’s watch. This watch combines classic design with modern features and functionality.

The watch’s legibility, anti-magnetic properties, and water resistance make it a versatile timepiece. Perfect for everyday wear.

While its automatic movement and exhibition case back add a touch of horological sophistication. If you’re in the market for a well-made pilot’s watch, the Sinn 104 is worth considering.

The 104 is a good functional watch. It sports a ratcheting bezel with 60 ticks, with high-visibility markings.

The crystal is made of scratch-resistant sapphire, with a flat profile. It won’t obscure or distort the dial.

The Sellita SW 220-1 movement, is one of the most popular mechanical watch movements on the market. It has hacking seconds, high accuracy, and a small date complication.

All these add some extra functionality to the watch.

With a water resistance of 20 bars (200 meters), you’re looking at the complete package. As with all Sinn watches, the 104 is covered by a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Sinn 556

Sinn 556

Where the Sinn 104 has a classic design, the 556 is one of their more contemporary offerings. It’s a stainless steel watch, with a compact, 38.5mm case.

At 11mm thick, the case is also to my surprise slim for a modern stainless steel watch. This lends the 556 an unusual appearance.

It’s designed with many characteristics of a big, chunky watch. Including beefy lugs and a partially-shielded crown. But it has the wrist presence of a smaller, more formal watch.

This is great if you’re like me and prefer a medium to light wrist presence. It’s also great for women or anyone with more slender wrists.

True to Sinn’s pilot watch tradition, the 556 dials are designed for extra high visibility. The face of the dial is flat black, and it’s a true, deep black, not charcoal.

This makes the bright white hashes and wide, white hands look extra sharp. Best of all, even though the watch itself is contemporary, this is a classic colour pattern.

You can wear a black and white watch with anything. So the 556 is more of a generalist than a pure situational watch. The sapphire crystal is flat for clear visibility. Plus it is also coated for glare resistance on both sides.

Design

Design

The Sinn 556 has a classic design that is both elegant and understated. The watch features a 38.5mm stainless steel case with a brushed finish.

This gives it a sophisticated look. The case is water-resistant up to 200 meters, which makes it suitable for swimming and diving.

The dial of the Sinn 556 is simple and easy to read. The watch features large Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, with smaller hour markers between.

The hands are also large and easy to read, with a lume coating that makes them visible in low-light conditions.

Movement

The Sinn 556 is powered by an ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. It’s well known for its reliability and accuracy. The watch has a power reserve of 38 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.

The Sinn 556 comes with a choice of straps. Including a leather strap, a stainless steel bracelet, and a NATO strap. The leather strap is made from high-quality cowhide and features contrast stitching.

The stainless steel bracelet has a brushed finish. It matches the case, and the NATO strap is made from durable nylon.

Performance

The Sinn 556 is a very accurate watch, with a deviation of only a few seconds per day. The watch is also very reliable and requires very little maintenance. This makes it a great choice for everyday wear.

The watch is easy to read in both daylight and low-light conditions. Thanks to the large numerals and hands with lume coating.

The watch also has a date function at 4 o’clock, which adds to its practicality.

The water resistance of the Sinn 556 is also impressive. Making it suitable for swimming and diving. The watch also features a screw-down crown. It helps to prevent water from entering the case.

The Sinn 556 performs as well on the inside as it does on the outside. It’s powered by the same Sellita SW 220-1 movement as the 104.

So you don’t have to worry about accuracy or setting your watch. The 556 is also rated for 20 bars of pressure, so it’s suitable for swimming.

The Sinn 556 is a classic and reliable watch that is suitable for everyday wear. It has a clean and understated design that is both elegant and functional.

It’s water resistance and accuracy make it a great choice for outdoor activities. The watch is also easy to read in both daylight and low-light conditions. Its automatic movement requires very little maintenance.

On a whole, the Sinn 556 is an excellent choice. If you are someone looking for a high-quality mechanical watch. This Sinn watch is it. It combines form and function.

Sinn 103

Sinn 103

The Sinn 103 watch is a classic pilot’s watch that has been a mainstay in the market for decades.

Designed with both style and functionality in mind. This timepiece is a favourite among pilots and watches enthusiasts alike.

Sinn markets the 103 as “The traditional pilot chronograph”. The first thing you’ll notice about the dial is how busy it is.

There are 60-minute, 30-minute, and 12-hour subdials. These are located at the 9 o’clock, 12 o’clock, and 6 o’clock positions.

There’s also a date window at the 3 o’clock position, which provides some balance to the dial. Towards the outside, there are short, fat hashes at the five-minute mark.

The short, slim hashes mark the single-minute positions. There are also larger, lume Arabic numerals at the 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 11 o’clock positions.

Features

The Sinn 103 has a variety of features that make it a practical choice for pilots and travellers. One of its most notable features is its bi-directional rotating bezel. It can be used to time flights and other activities.

Additionally, the watch is water-resistant up to 200 meters. Making it suitable for swimming and diving.

The watch also features a day and date display. Also, luminescent hands and markers for easy visibility in low-light conditions.

Design

Sinn 103 design

The design of the Sinn 103 is both classic and modern. The watch has a 41mm stainless steel case with a matte finish. This gives it a sleek and sophisticated appearance.

The black dial is clean and uncluttered, with bold white hour markers and numerals. The dial is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. This adds to the durability of the watch.

The strap is made of high-quality leather. In case you are not a leather person then have a variety of colours, including brown, black, and blue.

Performance

The performance of the Sinn 103 is exceptional. Thanks to its high-quality Swiss-made movement. The watch is powered by the ETA 2824-2, which is known for its reliability and accuracy.

The movement has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. Plus it is protected by an anti-magnetic shield. This ensures that the watch remains accurate in all conditions.

The watch also features a screw-down crown. It helps to prevent water from entering the case.

With all this going on, you might expect the Sinn 103 to be tough to read, but it’s not. Like the other Sinn watches I’ve mentioned, the design is high-contrast.

The dial and subdials are all flat black, and all the markings are either plain or lume white.

The hands are nice and wide, and also have lume stripes on them. This plain colouration makes the 103 very easy to read, even in the dark.

The crystal has a high dome, which does distort the edge of the dial a bit. Still, the default Acrylic glass crystal is very sturdy, designed only for shatter resistance.

If you choose, you can pay an extra fee for a similarly-shaped sapphire crystal. It’s scratch and glare-resistant.

The crystal is surrounded by a ratcheting pilot’s bezel. A screw-down case back makes repairs simple if they should become necessary.

Sinn 856

Sinn 856

The Sinn 856 is the most understated of these four Sinn watches. At 40mm in diameter.

The stainless steel in the case has a medium wrist presence, with a slim, raised bezel. It leaves plenty of real estate for the dial.

The deal is that same high-contrast black I keep talking about. With white applied indexes that are raised enough to provide added texture.

The Sinn 856 is a regarded watch from the German brand, Sinn Spezialuhren. This watch is part of the 856 series which was introduced in 2010.

It has since become a favourite of watch enthusiasts and professionals alike. In this review, we will take a closer look at the Sinn 856 and explore its features, design, and performance.

Design

Sinn 856 design

The Sinn 856 has a simple and elegant design. It is characteristic of German watchmaking. The case is made of stainless steel and measures 40mm in diameter and 10.4mm in thickness.

Making it a versatile size that can be worn by both men and women. The case has a brushed finish that gives it a sleek and understated look.

The dial of the Sinn 856 is also simple yet highly legible. The hour markers are large and luminous, making it easy to read the time in low-light conditions.

The dial is available in a range of colours, including black, blue, and grey. The watch also features a day and date function, which is displayed at the 3 o’clock position.

One unique design feature of the Sinn 856 is the TEGIMENT technology used in the case and bracelet. For those who are new to this term TEGIMENT. It is a special hardening process.

It’s done to make the stainless steel more scratch-resistant and durable. This means that the watch can withstand daily wear and tear without showing signs of damage.

Movement

The Sinn 856 is powered by the Sellita SW300-1 automatic movement. It is a reliable and accurate movement that is widely used in the watch industry.

The movement has a power reserve of 42 hours and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).

It can cause damage to the movement. This means that the watch is very reliable and you can wear it in humid or wet environments without concern.

The Sinn 856 is a well-designed and highly functional watch. It is ideal for those who value accuracy, durability, and functionality.

The watch is versatile enough which makes it easy to wear in a range of environments. It can withstand daily wear and tear without showing signs of damage.
