Tudor Heritage Black Bay

Tudor Heritage Black Bay

Tudor Heritage Black Bay: As a watch collector, I’m drawn to Tudor and other brands for their history. They have a long account of building exactly as expected device watches.

But as we are discussing Tudor. While doing this without attracting equals to its greater. Plus more famous sibling is unimaginable.

If you know who am I talking about. Yes, I’m talking about Rolex.

However, I intend to keep my discussion of Rolex to a minimum and convince you that the Black Bay is a watch that can stand on its own two feet (or lugs?).

There are many in-depth articles about Tudor’s history and the Black Bay’s origins. If you are interested in knowing more about their history.

You can find it on Tudor, Monochrome Watches, and Hodinkee either here or elsewhere.

Why Tudor is Worth it?

Reasons why I love the Tudor Black Bay

I often hear the argument about the best reason to buy a Tudor. It is that it is the closest thing you can get to a Rolex without spending as much money.

I’m here to let you know that the best motivation to buy a Tudor is because it’s a Tudor. Tudor produced excellent timepieces like the Ref. No doubt very much influenced by its bigger brother.

7922, 7923, and Reference 7924 Major Crown Submariner. The immediate parent of the present Dark Inlet. These watches were well known among the plunging local area.

As a result of their ‘open costs’ and by and large vigour. Tudor established itself as a major player in the dive watch industry. After experiencing similar success with their prior models.

Thus, I ask, “Why Tudor?” Even though Tudor was at first established with an intention. It was of defrauding individuals.

For individuals who were unwilling or unable to pay Rolex prices. These dive watches have spent the past 66 years.

The release of 7922 in 1954 shows they can be their brand with a distinct identity.

To put that into perspective. The Rolex Submariner we are all familiar with was also introduced in the same year.

After graduating from college. I bought my brother a Tudor Black Bay Blue (ETA) five years ago. It was a gift from me for him my first-ever earring.

Since then this watch has rarely left his wrist. I wasn’t aware of the brand’s history or the fantastic timepiece I was about to buy.

Overview:

overview and case

I am thankful that I made this choice. Because I had considered watches from Alpina, Union Glashütte, and Mühle Glashütte. Also, Oris was comparable in price at the time.

Since then, I have realized that any other buy I had made at the time would not have come close.

I was only exposed to watches of a different class before buying this one. My previous watch was a Tissot PR200 and my previous watch was a Seiko Kinetic Perpetual.

I was blown away by the Black Bay, the first mechanical (automatic) watch. This watch had exceptional attention to detail.

A lot of large-scale shots of the dial. Also, not a single residue or glaring defect in sight.

A superb bezel with minimal back play. Along with a clasp that appeared to have been precisely machined and buttery smooth.

Having said that, this watch was anything but delicate. I never once asked myself, “Will doing X harm my watch in any way?” It immediately felt solid.

Those who own one or have tried one will understand what I mean. This watch won’t even react when you threaten it with your life. Let me be clear.

I am not an adrenaline junkie who enjoys the great outdoors. Even though I’m a workaholic on my best day and a couch-bound coffee snob on my worst.

I find peace in the fact that I don’t have to worry about my watch while I clumsily go about my day.

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay is one of those rare watches. It has not only won awards since it was released in 2012.

But it has also been proudly included in the rotation of a surprising number of collections.

It was inevitable that the Tudor Heritage Black Bay would receive the same treatment. As the tool diver Pelagos did for Basel last year.

Power Reserve:

Except for the 36mm, Tudor’s in-house MT5602 movement. A COSC-certified automatic calibre with a bi-directional winding system. Plus approximately 70 hours of power reserve.

All these are included in the entire Tudor Heritage Black Bay line this year. The anti-magnetic silicon hairspring and the extra chronometer accuracy certification. These are, of course, welcome additions.

But, the majority of people will find the 70-hour reserve to be particularly useful. Especially in comparison to the typical 40 hours found in a comparable ETA movement.

The watch can be set down on Friday afternoon. Then picked up on Monday morning without a hitch thanks to the brand-new Tudor movements.

Movement:

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay’s upgraded movement was accompanied by a few extra hints. These significantly enhance the dial layout and presentation.

Three straight lines of text and the Tudor shield have replaced the curved text at 6:00 and the vintage rose at 12:00. Both are subtle modernizations that bring the dial.

This brings it closer to a contemporary collection of classically inspired dive watches. As it removes the last few traces of retro-kitsch.

Bracelet:

bracelet

The Tudor Heritage Black Bay package’s new riveted bracelet. This is one of the coolest additions. At first glance, it doesn’t look much different from the old one.

But, it is a charming nod to the pioneering era of dive watches. The watches whose bracelets were constructed using riveted screws and stepped construction for comfort and durability.

These riveted screws can be seen on the 9:00 case side of the new bracelet for the Tudor Heritage Black Bay.

It is a very cool detail that does not improve the watch’s entire performance or comfort. But rather shows Tudor’s commitment to paying homage to the era that bore the watch.

If you don’t want the bracelet. You can still get the Tudor Heritage Black Bay on a distressed leather strap with a deployant clasp.

This is a look that very few dive watches can pull off. But the satin-polished case, warm, gilt dial tones, and colourful accents.

These features on the Tudor Heritage Black Bay were pulled off with ease.

But, if you choose a look other than leather or steel. Tudor offers an extra fabric strap that is colour-matched to the watch in each model.

These straps are a story in and of themselves. As they are from Tudor’s Heritage collection, which is full of fine details.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact. Each strap is jacquard-woven on looms by a family business. They have been around for a century in the St-Etienne region of France.

Design:

design

The straight-line Tudor Heritage Black Bay looks the same as its predecessors. It is probably a good thing. Considering that our very own James Stacey claimed.

He claimed that its design and dimensions resulted in “one of the most appealing watches on the market today.”

Although it is otherwise very well-proportioned. The 41mm case is probably best suited for a flatter wrist profile.

Having said that, it’s important to note the watch’s tall 12mm silhouette. The long 50mm lug-to-lug length can make it look a little big on some wrists.

Even though this reflects the vintage-inspired case design. It also gives the watch a semi-rectangular shape that can take some getting used to.

There is also not much taper from the 9:00 and 3:00 edges of the case to the lugs.
